One of the hottest beverages of 2019 — besides bourbon, of course — is hard seltzer. The spiked carbonated drink is so popular that bars have been running out of it.
Effervescent and mildly fruity, hard seltzers make for an invigorating alternative to the furrowed-brow realm of craft cocktails. They’re just missing one thing: bourbon.
Hard seltzers use alcohol made from fermented cane sugar or malt liquor. Because these add little flavor, you can use them as a mixer with your favorite spirit. In other words: No one’s stopping you from adding a shot of Ezra Brooks to that can of White Claw.
But you can also take the spirit of the hard seltzer to the next level with your own mad mixture, using the same ingredients they do: sparkling seltzer, a hint of fruit, and a shot of your favorite bourbon.
It’s a refreshing, fizzy twist that can even stand in for your regular holiday bubbly. Try these DIY versions:
Cranberry-Lime Bourbon Seltzer
2 ounces of Ezra Brooks Kentucky Straight Bourbon
6 ounces of lime-flavored seltzer
1/4 cup of cranberry juice
Wedge of fresh lime
Fill a highball glass with ice. Pour in bourbon, then seltzer and cranberry juice, and stir lightly. Squeeze wedge of lime and drop in glass. Place three cranberries on a pick for garnish.
Optional: Dampen the rim of the glass with water, then dip in a saucer of sugar.
Bourbon and Cherry Fizz
1.5 ounces David Nicholson 1843 Bourbon
1 8.45-ounce Perrier “Slim Can” Seltzer, chilled
1 tablespoon Luxardo cherry syrup
One Luxardo cherry (optional)
Place 2 to 3 large ice cubes in a tall glass. Add seltzer, cherry juice, and bourbon; stir lightly. Top with cherry, if desired.
Sparkling Ginger Lemonade
2 ounces Rebel Kentucky Straight Bourbon
Fill highball glass with cracked ice. Pour in Rebel KSB, then add ginger liqueur and stir, top with sparkling lemonade.
