What is National Bourbon Heritage Month?

September is National Bourbon Heritage Month, and trust us, there’s a lot to celebrate! Here at Lux Row Distillers, nothing makes us happier than a month dedicated to bourbon, and we’re here to help you get in the spirit—literally.

Read on to learn more about the history of National Bourbon Heritage Month so that you can celebrate in true bourbon-loving fashion. Plus, we’ll let you in on a few creative ideas to help you make the most of this special time of year.

What is National Bourbon Heritage Month?

Although people have been drinking (and celebrating) bourbon for centuries, it wasn’t until 2007 that September was declared National Bourbon Heritage Month. Since then, this month-long special occasion has brought bourbon enthusiasts together to sip, stir, shake, and savor this delicious libation.

National Bourbon Heritage Month is special because it honors a truly American innovation. In fact, in 1964, the U.S. Congress passed an act that solidified bourbon as a uniquely American product by mandating that bourbon must be made in the U.S., along with a few other conditions.

Bourbon History 101

Bourbon is even better when you know the history behind your favorite dram, which is why brushing up on your bourbon knowledge is a great way to kick off the month’s festivities.

Bourbon production dates all the way back to the 18th century when early American settlers began putting the abundance of corn in the New World to good use. Kentucky was an important production hub, and Bourbon County lent its name to this pinnacle of American drinking culture.

The history of Bourbon is complex and fascinating, and there are plenty of ways to learn more. You can start by booking a distillery tour, perusing our blog, or cozying up with a book and a glass of your favorite Lux Row Distillers bourbon.

Celebrate with Lux Row Distillers

As interesting as learning about the history of bourbon can be, the best part of National Bourbon Heritage Month is—you guessed it—drinking bourbon. However, you can raise a glass to this special occasion in a more festive fashion with these celebratory ideas:

  • Book a Distillery Tour: When you book a tour at our distillery, you’ll have plenty of chances to taste, learn, and celebrate with our community of dedicated bourbon lovers.
  • Host an At-Home Tasting: Compare, contrast, and discuss which bourbons are your favorites by hosting an at-home tasting. Pick up a few bottles to ensure your tasting event will feature high-quality, delicious iterations of everyone’s favorite spirit.
  • Treat Yourself to Something Special: It wouldn’t be a true celebration without a little indulgence, which is why National Bourbon Heritage Month is the ideal opportunity to add a special bottle like Blood Oath, Lux Row 12-Year, or one of our Distiller’s Collection Bourbons to your collection. Of course, to get those, you’ll need to come on by the Distillery.
